D&RGW 223 – National Register of Historic Places Inventory

The Golden Spike Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in Ogden, Utah, wants to share this original document filed on October 24, 1978 that details the D&RGW 223. This formal document shows that the locomotive was originally gifted to Salt Lake City on July 24, 1941 and moved to Liberty Park in Salt Lake City, Utah. The document provides a detailed description of the #223 Grant steam locomotive, including size, original use, and modifications.

When the 223 was moved from Liberty Park to the Denver & Rio Grande Depot in 1980, the D&RGW 223 gained historical significance to the Utah State Historical Society. One of the future activities of the Golden Spike Chapter is to contact the National Park Service to investigate if they would like us to provide an update on the restoration project.
